Chronic bronchitis is a lung condition that causes chronic inflammation of the airways in the lungs, causing coughing and wheezing. The cause is unclear, but it may be due to allergic reactions, infection or even smoking. If left untreated, chronic bronchitis can worsen over time and possibly lead to complicated respiratory failure. Here are some symptoms you should look out for if you have chronic bronchitis.
Causes
A virus or bacteria does not cause chronic bronchitis. Cigarette smoking, according to most experts, is the leading cause of chronic bronchitis. Air pollution and your workplace environment may also be factors. This is especially true if you smoke as well.
Bronchitis symptoms are frequently associated with other lung diseases, such as:
- Asthma
- Emphysema of the lungs
- pulmonary scarring (pulmonary fibrosis)
- Sinusitis
- Tuberculosis
- Upper respiratory illnesses (Source)
Symptoms
Symptoms could include:
- Cough, also known as smoker’s cough
- Mucus coughing (expectoration)
- Wheezing
- Discomfort in the chest
- People with chronic bronchitis frequently cough and produce mucus for many years before experiencing shortness of breath.
- Low oxygen levels cause bluish fingernails, lips, and skin.
- Breathing causes wheezing and crackling sounds.
- Foot swelling
- Heart attack (Source)
Diagnosis
- Spirometry. A spirometer is used in this test to determine how well your lungs are working.
- Peak flow metre. This test determines how quickly you can blow air out of your lungs.
- Arterial blood gas. This blood test determines the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood.
- Pulse oximetry. An oximeter is a small machine that measures the amount of oxygen in your blood.
- X-ray of the chest. This test photographs your internal tissues, bones, and organs, including your lungs.
- A CT scan. This imaging test creates images of the body using X-rays and computer technology. (Source)

Chronic Bronchitis Treatment
Chronic bronchitis treatment focuses on both the causes and the symptoms. It could include:
- Smoking cessation
- avoiding secondhand smoke and other lung irritants
- Taking medications orally (by mouth) to open airways and help clear mucus
- Using inhaled medications like bronchodilators and steroids
- Obtaining oxygen through portable containers
- Having lung reduction surgery to remove damaged lung areas
- In rare cases, receiving a lung transplant
- Air humidification
- Pulmonary rehabilitation can assist you in learning how to live with your breathing issues while remaining active. (Source)
Diet For Chronic Bronchitis
Eat a good source of protein at least twice a day to help keep your respiratory muscles strong. Milk, eggs, cheese, meat, fish, poultry, nuts, and dried beans or peas are all good options. To shed pounds: Choose low-fat protein sources such as lean meats and low-fat dairy products. (Source)
