ABHAYARISHTAM, also called ABHAYARISHTA, is a herbal formulation that is traditionally used for digestive disorders. Ayurveda, which is an ancient Indian system of medicine, is based on the principles of natural healing. Abhayarishtam is a liquid herbal medicinal product that is primarily used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, in particular constipation.

Abhaya (Terminalia chebula), which is also known as Haritaki, is a major component of Abhayarishtam. Abhaya is a powerful herb with laxative properties and is considered to be effective in relieving constipation by promoting bowel movements and improving digestion.

In Ayurveda, Abhayarishtam is often prescribed to individuals who suffer from chronic constipation, piles (haemorrhoids), and other digestive issues. It’s said to help regulate bowel movements and reduce the stools, so that you can evacuate your bowels easier.

Ingredients in Abhayarishtam

  • Abhaya (Terminalia chebula): Also known as Haritaki, it is the main herb and active ingredient in Abhayarishtam. It is known for its laxative, digestive, and cleansing properties.
  • Jaggery or Honey: These natural sweeteners are used as a base for fermentation and to enhance the taste of the formulation.
  • Haritaki: Haritaki is a highly beneficial medicinal plant, used to treat diabetes, support digestion, relief from constipation and boost the body’s healing powers. It’s also used for the treatment of sore throats and lung infections such as cystic fibrosis.
  • Mridvika: Grapes are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, helping to treat asthma during both summer and winter as well as eye problems and cancer.
  • Vidanga: In treating diabetes mellitus, leperiasis, asthma, tuberculosis, piles and bites from insects, the properties of this potent plant are used to treat antidiabetic, diuretic, Antiparasitic, antibacterial, wound healing, anticancer, hypoglycaemic, antioxidant. 
  • Madhuka Pushpa: The plant has an excellent therapeutic effect on diabetes mellitus, piles, rheumatism, bronchitis, tonsillitis, eczema and a variety of skin conditions.
  • Chavya: In the treatment of coughs, asthma, abdominal pain, bloat, and abdomen tension, have or long pepper has a significant role to play. It is also able to alleviate constipation, improve digestion and treat the infestation of worms. 
  • Trivrit: Congestion, bloating and abdominal discomfort are relieved by this herb’s purgative action. In addition, it helps heal wounds and promote weight loss by treating worm infestation.
  • Danti: The analgesic and antipyretic properties of Danti help to alleviate pain and reduce fever. It is used for the treatment of edema since it is a naturally occurring blood purifier. In the treatment of problems such as paralysis, sciatica, and gout it is also effective.

Health Benefits and Uses of Abhayarishtam

  • Laxative and Relieves Constipation: Abhayarishtam is primarily known for its laxative properties, which make it effective in relieving constipation. It is beneficial to soften the stools and support regular movement of the feces, providing relief from constipation.
  • Digestive health: By improving digestion and assimilation of nutrients, this formulation promotes overall digestive health. Encouraging the correct elimination of food may help to alleviate several symptoms such as indigestion, abdominal pain, and gas.
  • Piles and Hemorrhoids Management: Abhayarishtam’s gentle laxative action may be helpful for patients with piles or hemorrhoids. It may help to manage the condition by reducing the strain on the digestive system during bowel movements. 
  • Intestinal worms: Abhayarishtam is thought to have ananthoplasmintic properties, meaning it may promote the elimination of parasites and infection in the intestine.
  • Liver support: Abhayarishtam is used by some healthcare professionals to promote liver function and remove toxins from the body. In addition, it may help to eliminate toxins and promote overall liver health. 
  • Colon Cleansing: Regular use of Abhayarishtam, by promoting regular bowel movements and avoiding constipation-associated problems, contributes to maintaining the health of the colon.
  • Weight management: Some traditional Ayurveda practices use it as part of their weight management strategies. It helps in improving digestion and controlling bowel movements, which may indirectly help in weight management.
  • Mild detoxification: According to some Ayurveda experts, it has a mild detoxifying effect. It helps in getting rid of toxins that have built up in the body.
  • Rejuvenation: According to some Ayurveda practitioners, Abhayirishtam rejuvenates the body and promotes overall health.

Side Effects of Abhayarishtam

  • Diarrhea or lose tools: Some people may experience diarrhea or loose stools due to the laxative properties of Abhayarishtam. If taken in high doses, some people may experience loose stools. 
  • Abdominal discomfort: Some people may experience mild abdominal discomfort such as bloating or gas.
  • Interactions with medications: Some medications, such as those used for diabetes mellitus, blood thinners, and other medical conditions, may interact with Abhayarishtam. Therefore, it is important to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking other medications before taking Abhayarishtam to avoid interactions.
  • Allergic reactions: Some people may have an allergic reaction to the herbs or any of the ingredients. These reactions may range from mild skin rash to more severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing.
  • Pregnancy and lactation: Pregnancy and breastfeeding women should take precautionary measures and consult with their doctor before using Abhayarishtam as the safety of this product during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well known.
  • Children and elderly: Abhayirishtam should not be given to children or the elderly under any circumstances. It should only be given to children and the dosage should be adjusted.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: If you have diabetes, gastrointestinal conditions, or liver problems, you should use Abhayarishtam with caution and consult your doctor.
  • Quality and purity concerns: Ayurvedic medicines can cause unexpected side effects if they are not of good quality or have been adulterated. This is why it is important to ensure the authenticity and purity of medicines.

Therapeutic Dosage

The recommended therapeutic dosage for an individual may differ depending on their age, severity, and state of health. It is essential to seek the advice of a qualified Ayurvedic physician, who will assess the indications and provide the appropriate dosage for a specified period. 

The minimum effective dosage is 12-24 ml, which should be taken once or twice daily, preferably after a meal. The dosage can be diluted with equal amounts of water or as advised by the physician.
