When people hear the term metabolic health, the first thing that often comes to mind is blood sugar. But according to Dr. Anand Hinduja, a physician specialising in diabetes and metabolic disorders, metabolic health is much broader than a glucose reading.

Blood sugar is certainly important, but so are blood pressure, cholesterol, body composition, waist circumference, physical activity, diet, sleep and family history.

A person can have apparently normal blood sugar and still have several underlying metabolic risk factors.

So, what does good metabolic health really mean—and what can we do to protect it?

What Is Metabolic Health?

Metabolic health refers to how effectively the body regulates processes such as blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and energy balance.

Metabolic health is about looking at the whole picture rather than one number, explains Dr. Hinduja.

This broader approach matters because metabolic problems often develop gradually. Insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, hypertension and abnormal glucose levels can occur together and increase the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

According to Dr. Hinduja, assessing metabolic health should therefore involve more than simply asking whether someone’s blood sugar is normal.

Can You Have Normal Blood Sugar and Still Have Poor Metabolic Health?

Yes.

A normal glucose reading can be reassuring, but it does not necessarily mean that every aspect of metabolism is healthy.

For example, a person may have normal blood sugar while also having:

  • Excess abdominal fat
  • High blood pressure
  • Elevated triglycerides
  • Low HDL cholesterol
  • Physical inactivity
  • Insulin resistance
  • A strong family history of diabetes

Insulin resistance can develop before blood glucose becomes clearly abnormal. The body may initially compensate by producing more insulin to keep glucose levels within range.

Over time, however, this compensation may become less effective, potentially contributing to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

This is why metabolic health needs to be viewed as a complete picture rather than a single blood-test result.

Why Waist Circumference Matters

Stepping on a weighing scale tells you how much you weigh. It doesn’t necessarily tell you where that weight is coming from.

Dr. Hinduja emphasises that waist circumference and abdominal fat can provide additional information about metabolic risk.

Visceral fat—the fat stored around internal organs—is particularly associated with metabolic dysfunction.

Two people can have the same BMI but very different levels of abdominal fat and therefore potentially different metabolic risk profiles.

For this reason, maintaining a healthy body composition is important, rather than focusing exclusively on the number on the weighing scale.

Diabetes Prevention Starts Before Diabetes

One of the most important messages in metabolic health is that prevention doesn’t have to begin after a diabetes diagnosis.

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes can include excess weight, abdominal obesity, physical inactivity, family history, hypertension, abnormal cholesterol and a previous history of gestational diabetes.

“Don’t wait for diabetes to become the reason you start taking care of your metabolism,” says Dr. Hinduja.

For people with risk factors, appropriate screening can help identify problems earlier and create an opportunity for lifestyle intervention.

The Lifestyle Habits That Support Metabolic Health

There is no single food, supplement or exercise that can guarantee good metabolic health.

Instead, sustainable everyday habits matter.

1. Stay Physically Active

Regular physical activity helps the body use glucose and can improve insulin sensitivity.

Walking, cycling, swimming, strength training and other forms of exercise can all contribute to better metabolic health.

For adults, the World Health Organization recommends 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or an equivalent amount of vigorous activity, alongside muscle-strengthening activities.

But Dr. Hinduja points out an important practical message:

Some movement is better than none.

For someone who has been sedentary, beginning with regular walking and gradually increasing activity can be more realistic than attempting an extreme exercise routine.

2. Focus on Overall Diet Quality

Metabolic health is influenced by what we eat, but that doesn’t mean following the latest restrictive diet.

A sustainable eating pattern can include vegetables, fibre-rich foods, appropriate protein, minimally processed foods and sensible portions.

At the same time, excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates, added sugars and highly processed foods should be limited.

The best diet is ultimately one that is nutritionally sound and realistic enough to maintain over time.

3. Don’t Ignore Sleep and Stress

Sleep and stress are often missing from conversations about diabetes prevention.

Poor sleep can influence appetite, energy levels and food choices, while chronic stress can make healthy eating, exercise and weight management more difficult.

“Healthcare isn’t only about the prescription or the blood report,” says Dr. Hinduja. “We also need to understand how a patient is sleeping, eating, moving and coping with stress.”

Which Tests Can Help Assess Metabolic Health?

Depending on an individual’s age and risk factors, a doctor may consider:

  • Blood pressure
  • Fasting blood glucose
  • HbA1c
  • Lipid profile
  • Body weight and BMI
  • Waist circumference
  • Liver-related assessments where clinically appropriate
  • Additional tests based on individual risk

HbA1c and blood glucose testing are commonly used to assess diabetes and prediabetes, but the appropriate tests and frequency of screening vary from person to person.

People with a strong family history of diabetes, excess abdominal weight, hypertension, abnormal cholesterol or other risk factors may benefit from discussing metabolic screening with a healthcare professional.

Dr. Anand Hinduja’s 5-Point Metabolic Health Checklist

For people wondering where to start, Dr. Hinduja’s approach can be summarised in five simple steps:

1. Know your numbers: Don’t monitor only blood sugar. Pay attention to blood pressure and cholesterol too.

2. Watch your waist: Body composition and abdominal fat matter.

3. Move every day: Reduce prolonged sitting and incorporate regular physical activity.

4. Eat for the long term: Choose a sustainable, balanced eating pattern rather than extreme diets.

5. Screen early: If you have diabetes risk factors, don’t wait for symptoms before speaking with a healthcare professional.

The Bottom Line

Metabolic health is not simply about avoiding diabetes. It is about understanding how blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, physical activity, diet and other factors work together.

A normal blood sugar result is good news—but it shouldn’t necessarily be the end of the conversation.

The better question may be:

“How healthy is my metabolism overall, and what can I do today to protect it for the future?”

As Dr. Anand Hinduja emphasises, prevention should begin before disease becomes established.

Small, sustainable improvements in movement, nutrition, sleep, weight management and regular health screening can become important steps toward better long-term metabolic health.
