Maintaining oral hygiene is very important for overall health. While commercial toothpaste options are abundant, they may have additives, abrasive components and sometimes ingredients that can be harmful. Now that I am a huge fan of ditching anything inorganic, chemical-based or processed (check out our Label Padhna Zaroori Hai Campaign), I had no clue of how I could replace toothpaste with something very natural and healthy. Fortunately, in a random conversation with two beautiful ladies (Mamta Dhyani and Kavita Khatri) in my neighborhood who have had dental issues over the years shared with me one such powerful home remedy – a DIY home-made turmeric toothpaste, using simple ingredients: turmeric, salt, and mustard oil. Now, this is a game changer and a huge blessing if you want to keep your teeth, healthy and bright.
You Just Need 3 Ingredients in this DIY Home-Made Turmeric Toothpaste
- Turmeric: Known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
- Salt: Acts as a natural abrasive, helping to remove stains and plaque.
- Mustard Oil: Enhances gum health and acts as a natural antiseptic.
You might skip Mustard Oil, but going with my personal experience, you should!
Method of This Home Remedy for Toothpaste:
- Mix the Ingredients: Combine equal parts of turmeric powder, salt, and mustard oil in a bowl.
Ok, since this is a home remedy for dental care, there is no hard and fast rule regarding the quantity of the ingredients. You can use them in equal parts or maybe 2:1:1 (Turmeric:Salt:Mustard Oil) or as per your preference and come to the conclusion as to what works best. A Australian company Smile Bar in it’s blog goes by 2:1:1 formula.
How To Use?
- Brush Your Teeth: Apply the mixture to your toothbrush and brush your teeth as usual.
- Hand Application: Alternatively, use your fingers to rub the mixture onto your teeth and gums.
- Mouth Rinse: Mix a small amount of the paste with water and use it as a mouth rinse.
You can use either of the three.

Benefits of DIY Turmeric Toothpaste for Dental Health and Teeth Whitening
1. Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce gum inflammation and prevent periodontal diseases. A study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dental Research found that turmeric mouthwash was effective in reducing plaque and gingivitis.
2. Antibacterial Effects
Both turmeric and salt have natural antibacterial properties that help eliminate harmful bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities and infections. Two different research and studies (study 1, study 2) have highlighted the antibacterial effects of turmeric against oral pathogens.
3. Whitening Teeth
The abrasive nature of salt helps in removing surface stains, while turmeric contributes to a natural whitening effect without the use of harsh chemicals. According to a study in Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, turmeric has been shown to have natural teeth-whitening properties. Interestingly, even brand Coalgate on their website vows turmeric for teeth whitening.
4. Gum Health
Mustard oil not only helps in massaging the gums but also acts as an antiseptic, promoting overall gum health and reducing the risk of gingivitis. Many studies notes the effectiveness of mustard oil in improving oral health and reducing gum disease.
5. Reduces Bad Breath
This combination helps neutralize odors and reduce bad breath, thanks to the antibacterial properties of turmeric and salt, and the freshening effect of mustard oil. A review discusses the use of turmeric in managing oral health and reducing bad breath (Prasad & Aggarwal, 2011).
